A Week in Review 2.24.16

What’s up Cats!? It’s a new week which means yet again there is even more news on Arizona Athletics. This past week was an exciting one thanks to our Men’s Basketball team who took on ASWho and pulled out a dominating win of 99-61, showing once again which school in Arizona really does run the state (hint: it’s not the guys who hold the forks).

This week, our boys are in Boulder on Wednesday and take on CU at 7pm and will be televised on ESPN2. Then they will head to Salt Lake on Saturday to play No. 22 Utah at noon, which will be televised on ESPN. Only two more weeks until March Madness, needless to say we’re stoked and you should be too!

Gymnastics also competed this past week against ASU in the territorial cup and brought home a win. The GymCats introduced some new gymnasts this week including performances by freshman Skyler Sheppard. This meet also accounted for Arizona’s highest beam score of the season with a 49.25. One things for sure, these girls really know the definition of #ARIZONASTICK. The GymCats take on the Washington Huskies this Saturday at 4pm in McKale! Make sure to wear pink in honor of breast cancer awareness and this season’s ThinkPink meet!

A Week in Review 2/14/16

What’s up Wildcats?

We hope you are having a great week so far. We have a few things to fill you in on about some of the sporting events that took place last week.

The softball team opened up its season by participating in the Hillenbrand Invitational that took place on February 11th through the 14th. They faced Southern Utah in the first two games, then played North Texas, Purdue, Nebraska-Omaha, and UC Santa Barbara. The Wildcats swept in six games making the overall score overall score 63-12. The team is traveling to Palm Springs in California to play in another tournament.

It was also a big week for gymnastics. After being on the road for two weeks, the GymCats faced Stanford on February 13th in McKale. The team hit 24 for 24 of the routines but the fell short, making the overall score 196.65-196.15. There was about 3,000 people in the crowd and the Cats continued to hit the vault and show off their grit through the routines. They have a busy week ahead of them as the prepare to take on our rival, Arizona State in Tempe on Monday, February 22nd.

The basketball team also faced UCLA on Friday night and USC on Sunday night. The Cats struggled a bit in the first half when they played UCLA but were able to come back from a 10 point deficit, get it together defensively, and took advantage of the foul trouble that UCLA was getting into. Gabe York was a top scorer with 17 points against USC. Ryan Anderson also added 14 points and Mark Tollefsen scored 11 points alone in the first half. Arizona has now moved up to #12 in the AP Poll. The Wildcats will take on Arizona State this Wednesday in McKale at 7 p.m. Let’s fill up the Zoo and remember to wear red!!

That’s all we have for you this week!

Continue to Bear Down, Wildcats!

Arizona Swim & Dive

Imagining a Wildcat swimming in the pool isn’t the prettiest picture to paint but luckily for UofA, our Wildcats come in the human form. Arizona Women’s Swim and Dive is killing it this season ranked 11th in the nation and Men’s Swim and Dive is holding their own being ranked 15th in the nation. Friday and Saturday are big days for these athletes because we are hosting Texas swim who are ranked 1st overall for Men’s and 4th overall for Women’s. To even further up the ante this meet is Senior Day for your Arizona Swim team as well at the last home event of the season.

These guys are the real deal with 35 athletes on the team qualified for the Olympics. All the fun starts on Friday, January 29th at 4pm and continues through Saturday, January 30th at 11am. On Saturday breakfast will be served at 10am, so for all you donut lovers out there just know we have all of your sweet tooth lanes filled and ready for a shot gun start. See you there to cheer on our fellow Wildcats!

Welcome Back ZonaZoo

Welcome back ZonaZoo!

We hope you had a great and well-deserved winter break. We hope that you are getting back into the swing of your classes and are excited for Arizona Athletics this semester.

Over the break, the men’s basketball team faced UNLV, Long Beach State, ASU, UCLA, and USC going 3-2 over that span. The Cats also took on Washington and Washington State during the first week of school and got back-to-back wins.

Last week, Arizona traveled to northern California to take on Stanford on Thursday night and Cal on Saturday night. The Cats beat The Cardinal 71-57 but fell to the Bears by one point making the final score 74-73. After losing to Cal last week, Arizona fell from No. 12 to No. 18 in the AP Top 25 poll. This loss puts Arizona in the middle Pac-12 standings and also plays a big role in the Pac-12 tournament in March.

Luckily the Cats are returning to McKale this week to take on Oregon on Thursday at 7pm and Oregon State on Saturday. Arizona has also won 49 straight home games in McKale and beating the second-place Oregon Ducks on Thursday would mean the 50th straight win at McKale for the basketball program. This win could also give Coach Miller his 300th victory. So these next few games are very important and we need the whole ZonaZoo section to be packed and loud all game long!

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams take on Texas here in Tucson at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center at 4pm on Friday and again at 11am Saturday. Come out and cheer on your Wildcats to a victory!

A Week in Review 11.18.15

Hey Wildcats,

Hope you're hanging in there with this cold weather and only a few weeks left in the semester. What a crazy week it has been for the Zoo, we have so much to fill you in on!

This past weekend was senior night for Arizona football who is now bowl eligible after beating No. 10 Utah in double overtime! In the first half of the game the Wildcats took the lead by a field goal making the score 3-0. Wide receiver, Samajie Grant, then caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Anu Solomon to make the score 10-0. Casey Skowron also successfully kicked for two more field goals adding 6 points for Arizona.

In the second quarter, the Wildcat’s Jamar Allah got a pick when the Utah quarterback, Travis Wilson threw the ball down the field. This created a lot of momentum for the Wildcats but Utah was not trailing far behind.

During the 4th quarter the ZonaZoo was loud, crazy, and definitely made an effect on the game. After two passing touchdowns and one on the ground, Solomon became injured, forcing Jerrard Randall to fill in. After 60 minutes of Arizona Football we were knotted at 27, which sent the game to overtime.

In the first overtime, Utah had the ball first and unable to score a touchdown on their 3rd down, they were forced to kick a field goal making the score 30-27. It was now Arizona’s chance to take the W, but they also settled for a field goal making the score 30-30.

Going into the second overtime, Arizona had the ball first. On the first play of the double overtime, Randall completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Nate Phillips that gave Arizona a 7-point lead over the Utes. Once Utah was on offense, the Zoo went crazy and halted the Utes offense. They were unable to score a touchdown giving the Cats a 37-30 win.

While this was surely a game to remember, we have one more game in the regular season. This Saturday is the Territorial Cup against ASU which is always the biggest game of the year regardless of the record of either team. Arizona and ASU have one of the most intense rivalries in college sports. The game will be held at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe and kick-off is at 1:30pm. Even if you can’t make it to the game, be sure to over to Schrier's Sports Grill for the ZonaZoo watch party!!

Additionally, Arizona Basketball is back and in full swing! Last Friday, on Nov. 13 the No. 12 Wildcats opened their season against Pacific in McKale Center. They won 79-61 with help of a double-double from Senior forward, Ryan Anderson. The following Monday, the Cats looked to go 2-0 with a win over Bradley. Freshman Alonzo Trier lead the Cats to a 90-60 victory with 22 points and 5 rebounds. He also went 14-14 from the stripe, only two free throws away from tying Jerryd Bayless' FT record. The 2-0 Cats are just getting started as they look to open the Wooden Legacy Tournament here in Tucson on Thursday, November 19th, against Boise State. The boys will also take on Northwestern State on Sunday November 22nd in their last home game before the Thanksgiving break. Then, the Wildcats will travel to Southern California for the next games in the tournament as they look to build on winning their past 3 non-conference tournaments. We have 16 home games left on the slate, lets make sure we pack the Zoo and continue to make McKale one of the hardest places to play in the country.

A Week in Review 11.11.15

What’s up Cats? We hope the colder weather is treating you well and that everyone is getting ready for the holidays! This week was a full one for Arizona Athletics and we can’t wait to fill you in!

Women’s soccer played ASU this weekend, and though they weren’t able to pull out a win this time, their game still had a record breaking attendance! This weekend the Cats are hosting an NCAA tournament match for the first time ever. They will face Northern Colorado this Friday at 6pm.

Women’s Volleyball played both Washington teams this weekend, beating Washington State 3-1 and losing to Washington 3-0. Volleyball faces Utah this week in an away game and their next home game is against USC on the 20th! Make sure to come out and show your support!

Our football team has faced some extreme adversity this season with a lot of injuries and starters out. Rich Rod has had to do some sleuthing to find a solution for our defensive line as well as offensive struggles. This weekend the Cats traveled to sunny Los Angeles to play USC. Although they lost, the Cats put in a lot of effort and fought the entire game. Anu Solomon threw three touchdowns to one interception for 352 yards while playing the whole game over Jerrard Randall. This really allowed him to get his rhythm back within the game and kept the flow of the offense constant throughout. By the beginning of the second quarter the Cats were up on USC 14-0 and ended up being tied by the half 17-17. They gave up a hard fight and ended up losing with a score of 38-30, but the game showed the redemption of the team’s rhythm, which was a spectacular sight. Our last home game is on Saturday against Utah at 8:00pm. The game will be aired on FOX Sports 1.

Due to the Basketball game on Friday, Bear Down Friday will be moved to Thursday at 5:00! Speaking of Basketball, Men’s Basketball had their first home game this past Sunday and their performance was anything but ordinary. The Cats beat Chico State with a whopping score of 90-54. We learned a lot through this game. One is that Cats are out for blood this season and two is that our team is stronger than ever.

Get ready for a crazy weekend ZonaZoo!

A Week in Review 11.3.15

Hey Wildcats,

We hope you all had a great weekend. Now here is a recap of what has been going on with Arizona Athletics in the past week.

Last weekend, the football team traveled to Seattle, WA to play the Washington Huskies. Unfortunately the Wildcats came up short, losing 49-3. The team will travel to Los Angeles, CA this weekend to play the USC Trojans, with a kickoff at 8:30 pm MST. Make sure to cheer on the wildcats as they compete for a bowl game berth!

It was also an eventful weekend for the women’s soccer team. The team traveled to Boulder, CO to play the Buffs, where the final score of the match was a 3-3 draw. Arizona scored three second-half goals for the first time since their season opener. In the last few minutes, there was a questionable call and the Wildcats had the goal disallowed which resulted in the tie. The team also played Utah in Salt Lake City and beat them 1-0.  Arizona’s record is now 12-4-2 this season. Make sure to come out to watch the soccer team take on ASU right here in Tucson on Friday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.

Also this weekend the men’s basketball team kicks off the 2015-2016 season with their exhibition game against Chico State on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 6 pm in McKale. The regular season opener is slated for Friday the 13th against Pacific at 7:30 PM. Make sure to come out, pack the zoo, and cheer on your wildcats as they defend their back-to-back Pac-12 titles!

That’s all for now, see you next week!

What's Good My Wildcats,

Coming off the quite unforgettable Homecoming 101, we hope all of you had a great weekend. From the times at Bear Down Friday with the instant classic lip-sync battle to the crowning of our King and Queen of Homecoming, the party started off right. Continuing into the morning, the parade came and went and the hype was real. The excitement translated to the Zoo on that hot Saturday afternoon and we supported our boys to the bitter end. Ending up on the wrong end of the scoreboard, our boys fought to a final score of 45-42 against the relentless Washington State Cougars. Trading scores back and forth the entire game, our boys couldn’t recover the onside kick and the Cougs lined up in the victory formation. Our defense was on the wrong side of the injury report and our quarterbacks continue to put Rich Rod in a tough place determining the starter. Looking to put this one behind us, the boys travel up north to Washington to take on the Huskies on Halloween at 8:00pm on Fox Sports 1.

Also going on the road is the Women’s Volleyball team as the take on a strong Stanford team and look to continue their winning streak, capitalizing on the 3-0 against Utah this past weekend.  Tune in to Pac-12 Networks at 8pm on Friday to catch the action. Also looking to continue their success is the Women’s Soccer team, as they swept both Oregon schools this past weekend winning both games with a score of 2-1. They travel to Boulder to challenge the Buffs at 2pm on Friday airing on Pac-12 Networks.

We will see you soon Wildcats,

Happy Halloween!
