The Wildcats started the season off strong by winning all three of their preseason games, which led them to be ranked in the top 20 in the national polls. Although the team won the nonconference games, the Cats lost in their first and second conference games after playing UCLA (56-30) at home and Stanford (55-17). These losses caused the football team to drop out of the top 25 poll. Though the team can make a lot of improvements in many areas, injuries also have not helped, especially on defense.
The good news is that football will be returning to Tucson this Saturday on Oct. 10 against Oregon State during family weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., so head on over with your family to the stadium in time to watch the game. Key players that you will want to keep an eye on for this game consist of running back, Nick Wilson, who has scored six touchdowns and has a total of 605 rushing yards so far this season; quarterback, Jerrard Randall, who has filled in for Anu Solomon. Randall has racked up 178 passing yards and 67 rushing yards alone against Stanford. Also keep an eye on receivers, Johnny Jackson and David Richards. Both receivers have had more than 230 receiving yards combined and have both scored four touchdowns each. Lastly, another great asset to the team is safety, Will Parks. He is currently leading the team with 36 tackles, four pass deflections, and has forced two fumbles so far.
The women’s soccer team had an eventful weekend when they played No. 5 Stanford on Sunday at Mulcahy Stadium. Arizona fell short in the double overtime when Stanford scored a goal in the 103rd minute. Despite the fact that they lost, the Cats put up a good fight and took away some positives from the loss. The next home game will be on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. against University of Oregon. Make sure to come out and cheer on the team!
