Welcome to the ZonaZoo 2015-2016

Welcome back ZonaZoo! Whether you’re a freshman or a senior this year we hope your summer was filled with lots of fun activities, relaxation, and time well spent with family and friends. Most of all, we hope you’re as excited as we are for an amazing year of Wildcat Athletics! The 2015-2016 athletic year will be a force to be reckoned with and there are many reasons for that.

Our women’s soccer team is already off to a trailblazing start with an undefeated record of 3-0. The first game women’s soccer played this season was on August 21st against Abilene Christian with a 4-0 win. Sophomore Gabi Stoian was declared Pac-12’s offensive player of the week on the 23rd when she brought the cats to victory against Santa Clara after she tied the game with a penalty kick that led the team to be able to win the game 2-1. Most recently the Cats played fellow Arizona school NAU and dominated the game with a 4-0 score. Volleyball also dominated at the SMU invite this past weekend, finishing their tournament with a clean 3-0 record. Junior Kalei Mau was named PAC-12’s defensive player of the week due to incredible performance this weekend with 28 digs in 49 sets.

With our women’s sports teams setting a high standard so far this season, we're more than positive that Wildcat Football will go above and beyond the expectations set for them. Coach Rodriguez will be starting his third season at Arizona and his 10 win season last year is one of three in UA history. Rich Rod is retaining his starting quarterback this season, sophomore Anu Solomon who passed 3,793 yards last year. Junior Scooby Wright will be returning this season and as the reigning Pac-12 defensive player of the year, is on most all of the pre-season watch lists for defensive player of the year honors. Also returning is kicker Casey Skowron, return man DaVonte Neal, and Punter Drew Riggleman. The season opener is against UTSA and though the Wildcats have defeated the Roadrunners in their last two encounters, it is not to be overlooked that the Roadrunners will be coming into Tucson this week hungry.

Kick-off is tonight, Thursday September 3rd at 7 p.m. at Arizona Stadium. Last night we held our weekly Bear Down Friday pep rally (we called it Bear Down Wednesday this week due to the day of the football game). Be sure to come to the upcoming Bear Down Friday festivities the evening before each home football game. Make sure to come support the Tucson community with a canned food item at the Bear Down Food Drive! All donations go to Tucson’s Community Food Bank. Do some good, show your spirit and most of all have fun!
